Poonhill trek itinerary comprises of 3 days, 4 days and 5 days.

However, how long does Poon Hill Trek take? No doubt Poonhill Trek is the best short easy treks from Pokhara. How many days to do a Poon Hill Trek? This might be the question mark you have when you find this story.

This is one of the most famous short treks around Pokhara. Poonhill trek is a scenic trek with good and comfortable lodges and offers great views of alpine lakes, waterfalls, mountain peaks and sunrise/sunset.

I have done Poonhill trek four times already – The first time I attempted it was at the age of 15. Those days we had to start walking all the way from Nayapul and the lodges then were simple and basic. It was simply impossible to get rooms with attached bathrooms. My last visit to Poonhill came in 2016 when I experienced stark difference in the area from my first memories. Nowadays you can find luxury lodges, transportation, electricity, internet, good sanitation and water facilities along with well-maintained trails in Poonhill, which is certainly positive development.

The Poonhill trek itinerary begins from Nayapul and gradually ascends to the villages of Birethanti, Ghorepani and Ghandruk. There is less risk of suffering from mountain sickness on Poonhill trek itinerary. Ghorepani and Ghandruk are home to Magar and Gurung communities. The main highlight of this trek is the hike to Poonhill at an altitude of 3210m. Poonhill is a popular viewpoint to watch majestic Dhaulagiri (8167M,) Manaslu (8163m), Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna South and others Himalayas. The trail from Tirkhedhunga to Magar village of Ulleri involves climbing 3,381 stone steps.

Poonhill trek itinerary can be approached in clock wise and anti-clock wise direction. The benefit of doing it in clockwise direction is in that it offers surest opportunity to witness Himalayan peaks from Poonhill. The only difficult part on this route is the crossing of steep uphill section from Tirkhedhunga to Ulleri. The anti-clockwise route on the other hand has many ups and downs and can be a wee bit tiring, especially the downhill hike to Ulleri.

Poonhill trek is also referred to as Ghorepani Poonhill trek, Poonhill Sunrise Trek and Ghorepani Ghandruk Trek. All these variations denote the same trekking trail, so better not to get confused over it.

You have multiple options to extend the Poonhill trek to do Khopra Danda Trek or Mohare Danda Trek or Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit Trek.

Poon Hill Route Map

Here is my recommendation of Poonhill trek itinerary:

1) Poon Hill Trek 3 days itinerary

Day 1: Pokhara – Ulleri (2070m) – Ghorepani (2860m)
Day 2: Ghorepani (2860m) – Tadapani (2630m)
Day 3: Tadapani – Gandruk (2470m) – Pokhara

My Opinion: This trek is shortened from the the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek 5 days 4 nights into Poon Hill Trek 3 days 2 nights by using a 4×4 wheel Jeep that brings you all the way from Pokhara to Ulleri (2070m). Within the first day, you will arrive at Ulleri (2070m) at about 11am. You will then walk to Banthanti (2300m) for lunch, and then continue the trek after lunch for about 3.5 hours. You will reach Ghorepani (2860m) before sunset, where Poon Hill (3193m) is a mere 1 hour trek from where you will be staying on Day 1. BEST for sure ! Easy and Nice!

2) Poon Hill Trek 4 days itinerary

OPTION A:

Day 1: Pokhara to Ulleri (2020m)
Day 2: Ulleri to Ghorepani (2750m)
Day 3: Ghorepani to Tadapani
Day 4: Tadapani to Pokhara

My Opinion: I will not choose this option as it descends from Poon Hill to Pokhara follow the same way you hike up to Poon Hill. Instead, please try to follow the trail to Ghandruk and spend a night in Ghandruk. You will have difference scenic views and experiences in mountains. Ghandruk Village is so beautiful and has so much to explore.

OPTION B: Ghorepani Ghandruk Trek

Day 1: Pokhara – Ulleri (2070m) – Ghorepani (2860m)
Day 2: Ghorepani (2860m) – Tadapani (2630m)
Day 3: Tadapani – Gandruk (2470m)
Day 4: Ghandruk – Pokhara

My Opinion:This is a better option as we do not go follow same way when you back from Poon Hill. Instead, spend a night in Ghandruk Village to enjoy the views and village life before heading to Pokhara. If you have 4 days, then this will be the best option.

3) Poon Hill Trek 5 days itinerary

Day 1: Pokhara – Nayapol – Tikhedhunga – Ulleri (2020m) – Banthanti
Day 2: Banthanti – Ghorepani (2860)- Poonhill
Day 3: Ghorepani – Tadapani (2630m)
Day 4: Tadapani – Gandruk (2470m)
Day 5: Gandruk – Syauli Bazar – Pokhara

My Opinion: Nowadays, many trekkers avoid the 5 days Poon Hill Trek because of the needs to climb 3,381 stone steps on day 1 which is from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri. The trek has been shorten to 3 days or 4 days due to now we have road access which you get get in a Jeep and drive up to Ulleri from Pokhara. This option is not so popular right now as many people choose to skip this staircases trek. Is a big NO NO for my side.
