Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park is one of only two national parks in Nepal designated a World Heritage Site. Spread over an area of 1148 sq.km., the park is home to Everest, the world’s highest mountain. Other mountains in the park are Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Pumori, AmaDablam, Thamerku, Kwangde, Kangtega and Gyachyung Kang. The average temperature during Winter is below 5 degree Celsius, during Spring and Autumn around 10-15 degree Celsius and 20-25 degree Celcius in Summer.

The park features rugged terrains, tallest mountains and glaciers, Bhotekoshi and Dudhkoshi Rivers, gorges, monasteries, sparse settlements and Tenzing-Hillary Airport. The vegetation comprises of pine, hemlock, juniper, scrub, rhododendron plants. More than 118 species of birds and 26 species of butterflies have been recorded in the park.  Yaks, Snow leopards, Himalayan Tahr, Red Panda are some rare species found in this region.

Sherpas are the indigenous inhabitants of  Sagarmatha National Park. The park has many Sherpa villages such as in Lukla, Phakding, Namche, Pengboche, Dingboche, Gorakshep etc. Sherpa culture, cuisines and hospitality is one of the main attractions for tourists and trekkers.

How to get there?

Morning flight from Kathmandu to Tenzing Hillary Airport operates on a regular basis. The flight takes about 45 minutes and is the most scenic mountain flight. Also there are flights that connect Kathmandu to Phaplu and Tumlingtar and from there you can walk for 5 days and 10 days respectively to reach Lukla. You can also take early morning public bus/jeep from Kathmandu that drives only up to Jiri/Shivalaya and then walk up to Lukla. If you would like luxuy or comfort you can hire a helicopter from Kathmandu domestic airport.
